The Shadow World is hidden from regual mudanes, so we don't see the vampires, werewolves, fearies, and demons. Fifteen year old Clary Fray thought she was just a regular girl, but one night she sees the supposed murder of a strange murder of a boy who no one else sees. The 'murderer' tells her that it was a demon that he killed and introduses her to the Shadow World, when the next day her mother is missing and the appartment is occupied by a demon. Jace saves her and takes her to The Institute, a home for Shadowhunters, demon hunters, and she meets his adopted family and his tutor. They find out that she had a block on her mind so they have to find the peron who put in there. They find that Magnus Bane, an eccentric warlock put in there and that it will come down on its own in time. They also find that they have to find the Mortal Cup that Clary's mom took before Valentine, an evil Shadowhunter, wants to make his own army of Shadowhunters. When they do find the Mortal Cup, it is reveiled that Hodge, the tutor, is working with Valentine, so he shows up and takes Jace and the Cup. Clary goes to Luke, her mom's friend, who also happens to be a werewolf and they go to where Valentine is to get Jace and the Cup. They manage to get Jace back but not the Cup, and it is reveiled that Valentine is Clary's father.
